Alun Melson profile

Alun Melson lives in Cramlington, Northumberland. He has been a Northern Rock saver since he was 18. He had to retire early on health grounds but viewed his shares as a safety net because he knew that his future earnings could be negligible. In particular he looked to his Northern Rock shares as the way he was going to pay for essential maintenance to his home, which he may lose if he can’t provide for its upkeep.

As a highly trained Paediatric nurse he thinks the Government has acted despicably. He says ‘I thought the government would help me, rather than deprive me of my shares or fail to give me fair compensation. He thinks it wrong that the Government aims to make a profit from the sale of Northern Rock when the debts have been paid off and has since bailed out other banks at their time of need without nationalising them. The final straw is that the Government has also rigged the compensation process to favour the Government at the expense of the previous share holders.
